Most fences don't fail all at once — a post rots at ground level, a rail sags, palings start popping after a big nor'wester. Targeted repairs deal with exactly that: the crook post replaced and packed firm, the broken rail swapped out, palings re-fixed or renewed so the line stands straight again. What can be repaired
Leaning fences are the most common call-out, and the cause is usually at the base: posts rotted where timber meets soil, or holes that were never deep enough for Canterbury wind loads. Individual posts can be dug out and replaced without pulling the whole line down. Split or wind-damaged rails get replaced in sections, palings re-nailed or swapped, and leaning runs pulled back to plumb and re-braced.
Gates that drag or won't latch often just need re-hanging — hinges, packing and a check that the gate post itself is solid. Small fixes like these make the difference between a fence that annoys you daily and one you never think about.
Repair or replace? A straight answer
Not every fence deserves saving. When posts are rotten along the whole run, rails are soft throughout and palings are splitting everywhere, patching costs money without buying much time — replacement is the honest advice. You will get that call straight: repair where repair makes sense, replacement where it genuinely costs less in the long run. Either way the site gets looked at first, because photos only tell half the story.
